Bio:
Dr. Valerio Poggi is researcher at the Seismological Research Centre (CRS) of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) in Italy and lecturer at the University of Pavia. His current research is focused on issues related to seismic hazard assessment (deterministic and probabilistic) and engineering seismology, with special regard to ground motion analysis, site response and structural damage evaluation.
Dr. Poggi first graduated with honors in Geology at University of Milano, Italy, and subsequently obtained his PhD in Geophysics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. Here he also served as researcher at the Swiss Seismological Service (SED). During this period, he had been involved in several nationally funded and international projects, such as the Swiss COGEAR (Coupled Seismogenic Geohazards in Alpine Regions) and SUIHAZ (the new seismic hazard zonation of Switzerland), and industrial projects with international academic partners PRP (Pegasos Refinement Project; the probabilistic seismic hazard evaluation for Swiss nuclear power plant sites) and NAGRA (The National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste). He also contributed to European Union funded projects such as NERIES (Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology) and SHARE (Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe).
Dr. Poggi has been lately employee of the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) foundation, where he was responsible for the development of the probabilistic seismic hazard models for continental Africa (e.g. the USAID funded project SSHARA) and for north-eastern Asia, as part of the Global Earthquake Hazard and Risk assessment initiative.
