Seismic Isolation and Dissipation

Term: 2nd Semester – Academic Year 2023-2024

Instructor: Prof. A. Filiatrault (andre.filiatrault@iusspavia.it)

Institution: IUSS, Pavia

CFU: 6

SSD: ICAR/09 Tecnica delle costruzioni – Structural Engineering

Duration: From 05.02.2024 to 01.03.2024, 4 weeks (45hrs lectures + 35hrs tutoring)

Schedule

Office hours: by appointment

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the course is to familiarize Structural Engineers with the various seismic isolationand dissipation systems that have demonstrated considerable potential through analytical studies, experimental testing and actual structural implementation. The discussion will focus on passive energy dissipation systems and base isolation systems.

DESCRIPTION

Theoretical lectures will be complemented by tutorials (aiming at the practical application of the concepts and methods developed during the lectures through a retrofit project) and the topics that will be discussed in the course are reported in the following.

Course contents:Review of Seismic Design Philosophies and Analysis Methods. Energy Concepts in Earthquake Engineering. Basic Concepts of Structures with Passive Energy Dissipating Systems. Metallic and Friction (Hysteretic) Dampers. Viscous and Viscoelastic Dampers. The ASCE 7-16 Design Provisions for Structures with Passive Energy Dissipating Systems. Theory of Linear Seismically Isolated Systems. Seismic Isolation Systems. The ASCE 7-16 Design Provisions for
Seismically Isolated Buildings. The AASHTO Design Guide Specifications for Seismically Isolated Bridges. Tuned-Mass Dampers. Self-Centering Systems.

REQUIREMENTS

Fundamental knowledge of structural analysis, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering
